Still in maternity
In addition to the famous test of the little foot, the baby also tests the little eye, little heart and tongue to check for congenital diseases, syndromes or some other health threat. They are also vaccinated still in the hospital against hepatitis B and take BCG, which protects them from tuberculosis.
The first visit to the mother’s breast should preferably take place in the delivery room. Even though the baby does not suck right now, the important thing is to stimulate skin-to-skin contact as it makes breastfeeding easier. Then the child leaves the room to take the vaccines and do the initial tests. Although some maternity units offer milk formulas during this time, the baby usually has a supply of nutrients that will last a few hours until the next feeding.
At home, restricted circulation
Doctors discourage visits in the first month of life, but if you want to get someone, make sure the person is healthy and the visits are short, about 15 minutes. Everyone has to wash their hands immediately before touching the baby. The same rule applies to parents.
A quiet home
The son has just come out of an environment of pure peace, the maternal womb. Therefore, the house should be equally quiet and quiet in the first days of life. Especially during breastfeeding and bedtime.
Still in the maternity ward, the nurse will shower in the room. Then just play at home, following a few steps. First, leave everything you need nearby – namely hypoallergenic glycerin liquid soap, which will serve for body and head, towel, cotton, diaper and clothing. The water in the tub should be 36 degrees, warm but comfortable. Experts recommend that early in life, the baby’s body be wrapped in a towel to wash the head first. Then dry your head and then wash your body, gently.
Changing the diaper
It is not necessary to change every time the newborn pees, but the period is of intense consumption of diapers, because they will do poo about eight times a day. When making the switch, avoid moist wipes, which contain chemicals that can irritate the baby’s skin. Prefer cotton and warm water. Boys and girls should always be clean from front to back, and in case of them the foreskin should not be forced down. The cleaning is always smooth.
What to do with the umbilical stump
Usually the remnant of the umbilical cord falls to the 15th day of life. Until then, you need to thoroughly clean his base, closer to the skin, with 70% alcohol at each diaper change. It’s normal to get some blood out.
The first trips to the pediatrician
It occurs within the first week after discharge from hospital to evaluate breastfeeding and the baby’s health. At this meeting the doctor sets the pace of the next visits, which usually occur on the 15th day, the first month, and then monthly.
Avoid rides in the first month
With the exception of the pediatrician, the baby should not go to the street early in life. In addition to the excess of contact with excess of people to offer direct risk to the health of the baby, busy environments, with noises and strong smells can stress the small one. But brief trips to the grandparents’ house or other quiet place are free.
Do not wipe your mouth
The lips, of course, can be sanitized after the feeding, but there is no need to wash the inside of the mouth, even if there is a layer of milk remnants on the baby’s tongue.
The position on the lap
Since at this stage it is very common to have reflux, the head should always be higher than the rest of the body. The little one does not yet have the strength to support the head, so parents should always hold it with their hands. Some positions also help relieve colic.
Normal and worrying jaundice
Most children have the problem, which leaves the skin yellow and reaches its peak around the 7th day of life. After that, the color gradually returns to normal. But if the yellow is very intense, it is best to check with the pediatrician if everything is okay.
They should, but only after the first consultation with the pediatrician. And they are brief, at most 15 minutes a day, only on the legs of the baby because their skin is very delicate, outside the period of highest incidences of ultraviolet rays, which occurs between 10am and 4pm or 5pm in warmer times. Even the indirect natural light already helps.
How to relieve colic
From the third week on, intestinal cramps begin to show. It’s normal, but the baby will cry with the nuisance. It is possible to alleviate the pain with massages taught by the pediatrician, who also prescribes medicines if necessary. Warm compresses, never directly on the baby’s skin, also help.
Avoid the pacifier
Before the first 15 days the pacifier is forbidden as it disrupts breastfeeding. But even then it can cause early weaning and other problems for the baby, according to a recent publication of the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics.
It’s not just the baby that needs care
This is a very tense period for parents, especially for the mother, who breastfeeds and often becomes overwhelmed with the constant demand of the child. The father needs to actively participate and the whole family support everything so that it runs smoothly, like a baby’s sleep
